Celebrating Global Day of Parents

Published: 1st Jun 2020

Did you know that the United Nations has chosen the 1st of June to be celebrated as the Global Day of Parents? No? Well, it’s a good job you stopped by our blog section!

The UN wanted to mark the first day of this month as an annual appreciation for all parents across the globe. The precious relationship parents have with their children is like no other – a unique bond both magical and everlasting. Parents worldwide show constant dedication and devotion to bringing up their children, supporting them every step of their journey from babyhood through to adulthood. Even though parents are appreciated every day by their children, it’s great that it’s official (and a nice reminder too!) Welcome to a wonderful day that millions of families will be celebrating!

The heart of Global Day of Parents

This special day aims to support the rights of children and families by recognising some of the following key areas:

  • Children have a right to good health and develop their well-being.
  • Children have a right to grow up free from poverty.
  • All children have the right to access education.
  • All children have the right to gender equality.

The significance of 2020

The past few months have been particularly challenging with the global COVID-19 pandemic escalating. Parents have found themselves having to juggle their work commitments and usual parenting responsibilities, alongside having extra jobs that they might not have had before the pandemic such as homeschooling. Nurturing their children whilst facing a unique and unprecedented time is of particular significance with this year’s annual day. That’s why this year’s Global Day of Parents is that much more of a timely event – to reflect and celebrate the roles and achievements of parents.

Celebrating the special day indoors

There are lots of ways you can celebrate today with your child and continue to help nurture and support them until they become adults. Here are some of Models Direct’s indoor suggestions to help you share great moments that will develop your child’s understanding about themselves and the world around them whilst strengthening your bond as their parent.

1. Healthy eating is vital for all of us so what better way to begin the journey than to introduce its importance to your child. It’s never too early to kick-start this topic of conversation, explaining what is nourishing to eat and what to avoid.

2. Keeping active is also another way that your child can stay healthy. Demonstrating age-appropriate exercises and joining in with them will help keep them engaged and motivated.

3. Children’s wellbeing is vital and what better way to teach them to understand inner peace and confidence than by practising popular wellbeing techniques such as mindfulness and yoga. Helpful online tutorials are available starting from a young age so it’s never too early to introduce a wellbeing routine. This will help keep them grounded and relaxed hopefully during stressful times, like what we’re currently experiencing.

4. Teaching your child life skills from covering simple things like tying their shoelaces through to washing their laundry is essential to their development. Once they acquire key skills, this will stay with them and remain a lifelong ability.

5. Gender equality is another key area that the Global Day of Parents promotes. Reading through the books of history about Suffragette’s is an excellent starting point to show children how their gender should not hold them back from achieving great things in life. Leading by examples of great figures from the past will help them understand that they too can make a difference in the world.

6. Without a shadow of a doubt, reading is an integral part of a child’s education. Every area of their learning will entail reading and comprehending different forms of texts. One way of helping your child develop their literacy skills is to read with them. Whether it’s paperback, eBook or audio, your child can choose which form of reading they’d like and share that experience with you.

Also, reading to your child is a lovely way of connecting with them; sharing thoughts, asking questions and telling stories makes up a huge part of the experience, carrying with it memorable moments that will be cherished in years to come by both parent and child.

7. With maths being a core subject at school, there are lots of fun ways to teach your child new mathematical concepts. There are lots of resources available online which are suitable from early years and beyond. YouTube also provides easy access to plenty of numbers and counting songs, handy tutorials and numeracy exercises that your child can do with you.
