It’s a great feeling when you have a game plan in place. You know where you’re heading and you have goals. Is one of yours to become a model? You’ve landed on the right page and we’re glad to meet you. Our agency, Models Direct, has a strong team of modelling enthusiasts waiting to help. Wanna know what you need to do? We’ll share our industry knowledge and explain what you need to do to kick-start a modelling career.
Step 1:
Build your portfolio.
This doesn’t necessarily have to be professionally curated, doing it yourself can be just as good. Yes, a professional photographer might be able to get you at the right angle to accentuate your features but you can strike it lucky too by collecting an array of diverse images. You’ll want to be submitting snaps that showcase your poses, your expressions, your style and your wardrobe, ensuring it’s kept regularly up to date particularly if you’re one for a new haircut and colour, or if you’re adding to your piercing or tattoo collection.
Step 2:
Find a local reputable modelling agency that’s government-regulated (like us!).
If you want to go solo, that’s possible but you’ll have a lot of hard graft and be dedicated to hunting down brands and making connections which may or may not materialise into your end vision.
Having the right agency by your side – supporting and rooting for you – helping you to build those valuable connections and be put forward to reliable and legitimate modelling work is the next step to focus on.
Speak to the team to see which modelling niche you could potentially cover (you’re not restricted to just one, mind). Teen modelling, family modelling, friends or couples modelling tapping the commercial, promotional or big screen campaigns. The possibilities and combinations are endless.
Step 3:
Be positive and learn to take constructive feedback.
This step is possibly one of *the* most challenging for the best of us. We know that saying to stay positive is easier said than done. It’s impossible to always feel like you’re ready to take on the world, and then to ask you to take a critical character analysis constructively, well that’s even tougher! But, we do kindly advise that these qualities, albeit super difficult to always be the master of, should be practised often because the modelling industry can be a tough place to break into. We don’t sugarcoat things here. We’re honest and open, one of the reasons why we’ve stood the test of time in this industry ourselves for the past thirty years.
We hope you’ve learnt something new from today’s blog but you’re *always* welcome to contact our team for further support. We’re a real team by the way, not just bots running on algorithms here – promise.
To shake things up a little, we’ve assembled some of our first-time models’ testimonials to give you a glimpse of what life is like as an MD model.
Gary (Reference: VRWN-8879) on his Spacelabs Healthcare campaign:
“Initially I was nervous as this was going to be my first proper model assignment. I had received full information about the shoot and Gemma from Models Direct had called me a few days before to go through the itinerary which put me at ease. The client was great they were very welcoming and made me comfortable. It was a great experience to see how the photographer Rob set up the cameras and lights and interacted with me with a storyboard highlighting what they would be videoing and photographing throughout the day. It was also great to be able to add input during the shoot adding extras which the client and photographer were more than happy to go with. The feedback I received back from the client on the day of the shoot was very positive with they remarked that they would love to use me again if required.”

“As a first time experience, I believed the environment to be welcoming and interesting. The cast of actors and directors involved were all polite. Getting to know, with as few times as we got, was insightful and respectful. I believe I did my best in the shoot when working with the directors. I hope that is true, and would be more than happy to find more work in this type of environment.”
Nathalie (Reference: GSDY-9494) expressed:
“I recently did a Campaign Shoot booked via. Models Direct – not to mention my first ever shoot! Instructions and all communication prior to the shoot were great – Gemma was super supportive! During the shoot it was cool to see the “behind the scenes” when they were shooting other models and get a sense for how shoots like these work. I was working alongside 15 other models, meeting new people in the same boat as you – this helped make the experience more comfortable and a lot of fun!
Overall, it was a cool and fun experience that I can now add to my portfolio.”
